HMPV Cases Reported in Bengaluru Amid Rising Viral Infections in China

As China battles a surge in viral infections, Indian authorities have confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bengaluru. The infected individuals include an 8-month-old baby currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and a 3-month-old infant who has already been discharged. These mark the first reported cases of HMPV in India.

Meanwhile, China is experiencing an outbreak of HMPV alongside other viruses, such as Influenza A, Mycoplasma Pneumonia, and COVID-19. Social media reports indicate that hospitals in China are overwhelmed with patients suffering from respiratory illnesses, with videos and images showing crowded facilities.

About HMPV

First identified in 2001, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to the flu. It can infect people of all ages, but young children (under five years), older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

Common Symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat

Symptoms typically appear 3 to 6 days after exposure to the virus. Severe cases may lead to complications requiring hospitalization, including severe cough and breathing difficulties. Immediate medical attention is crucial in such instances.

How HMPV Spreads

HMPV spreads through direct contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces, coughing, sneezing, or even handshakes.

Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV. Treatments focus on alleviating symptoms rather than curing the infection.

Prevention Tips

To reduce the risk of HMPV and other respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Consider wearing a mask and avoid close contact with sick individuals.
  • Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth) with unwashed hands.
  • Practice self-isolation if you are unwell.

People with pre-existing lung conditions or weakened immunity are advised to take extra precautions. Following these preventive measures can help mitigate the spread of HMPV.
