Sri Lanka to Modernize Public Transport with New Buses and Railway Upgrades

As a key step in enhancing public transportation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced plans to introduce a fleet of modern, comfortable, and technologically advanced buses under a new national transport initiative.

100 Low-Floor Buses for Colombo’s Main Corridors

Under this initiative, 100 low-floor luxury buses will be deployed along three key transport corridors in Colombo, improving accessibility and passenger convenience. A budget allocation of LKR 3 billion has been proposed for this project.

Additionally, Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) plans to invest its own funds to introduce 200 more low-floor buses to further strengthen the public transport network.

These new buses will be operated under newly established metro bus companies, which will function under a fully digital system, ensuring efficient operations and seamless passenger services.

Recognizing the critical role of rail transport, the President highlighted that poorly maintained railway infrastructure has negatively impacted passenger safety, comfort, and train speed. As a solution, the government will focus on repairing and constructing railway stations, aiming to establish a sustainable railway industry.

  • LKR 500 million has been allocated for the renovation of old railway stations to enhance efficiency and meet the growing passenger demand.
  • LKR 250 million has been earmarked for constructing new railway stations to fulfill increasing transport needs.
  • The Kelani Valley Railway Line will be extended beyond Avissawella in phases, with LKR 250 million set aside for the initial groundwork in the 2025 budget.

Integrating Bus and Train Services for a Seamless Commute

The government is in discussions with SLTB and private bus operators to implement a unified bus timetable across all routes, ensuring better coordination and reduced passenger wait times.

Furthermore, continuous investment will be made in the Kandy Multimodal Transport Hub Development Project, which is expected to play a significant role in regional transportation improvements.

These reforms aim to create an efficient, modern, and passenger-friendly transport system, driving economic growth and sustainable urban development in Sri Lanka.
