Government Establishes Committee to Evaluate Bus Modifications and Passenger Safety
The Cabinet has approved the formation of a specialized committee to assess how modifications and decorations in passenger transport buses impact public safety.
This committee will include representatives from key institutions such as the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation. Its primary task is to conduct a comprehensive study and submit a report with recommendations for appropriate actions.
Under existing regulations, any alterations to the design or structure of buses require prior approval from the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic. These modifications must comply with the Motor Traffic Act, as outlined in various government directives and Gazette notifications.
While amendments to the Motor Vehicles (Construction) Orders have been made since 1983, the Department of Motor Traffic has also issued internal guidelines for bus decorations and modifications. However, the government acknowledges that these orders have not been formally published under the Motor Traffic Act.
In light of these concerns and the potential risks posed to passenger safety, the Cabinet has approved the Transport Minister’s proposal to appoint a committee. This committee will analyze the implications of bus modifications and provide recommendations to ensure compliance with safety standards.
