Oscar-Winning Actor Gene Hackman and Wife Found Dead at Their Santa Fe Home

Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman (95), his wife Betsy Arakawa (63), and their pet dog were found dead at their home in Santa Fe on Wednesday.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths, stating that no foul play is suspected at this time. However, the exact cause of death remains unknown, and further investigations are ongoing.

According to Sheriff Adam Mendoza, the deaths were reported on February 27, 2025, in the early morning hours. At approximately 2:45 PM (local time) on Wednesday, deputies responded to a wellness check request, which led to the discovery of the bodies.

Hackman and Arakawa, who had been married since 1991, were known for maintaining a private lifestyle away from the spotlight.

Gene Hackman, one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, enjoyed a career spanning over six decades, winning two Oscars, two BAFTAs, and four Golden Globe Awards. He is best remembered for his iconic roles in “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.”

Hackman officially retired from acting in 2004, with his last performance in “Welcome to Mooseport.” Following his retirement, he and Arakawa relocated from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, where they led a quiet and private life.

Betsy Arakawa was a classical pianist, and she and Hackman were married for 34 years. Their sudden passing has left both the entertainment industry and their close circles in shock and mourning.
