Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Arrives in Sri Lanka

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sri Lanka this evening (April 4) on an official state visit, following a special invitation extended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Due to heavy rainfall at the time of his arrival, the official welcome ceremony was held indoors rather than in the customary outdoor setting.

Held under the theme “Friendship of Centuries – Commitment to a Prosperous Future,” this visit aims to further strengthen the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations.

High-Level Welcome at Katunayake International Airport

Prime Minister Modi and his delegation were warmly received at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, by several senior ministers of the Sri Lankan government. Among the welcoming party were:

  • Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism – Vijitha Herath
  • Minister of Health & Media – Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa
  • Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources – Ramalingam Chandraseker
  • Minister of Women & Children’s Affairs – Saroja Savithri Paulraj
  • Minister of Science & Technology – Krishantha Abeysekara
  • Deputy Minister of Economic Development – Anil Jayantha

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka, reflecting the growing significance of bilateral relations.

Key Engagements and Ceremonial Visits

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, focusing on strategic cooperation and regional development.

He is also expected to pay homage at the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura and inaugurate several India-assisted development projects across the country, showcasing India’s continued commitment to Sri Lanka’s progress.

Accompanying the Indian Prime Minister are top officials including:

  • External Affairs Minister – Dr. S. Jaishankar
  • National Security Advisor – Ajit Doval
  • Foreign Secretary – Vikram Misri

This visit is anticipated to pave the way for a new era of cooperation, with both nations reaffirming their dedication to regional stability and mutual prosperity.
