The Ministry of Public Security has called for the speedy investigation of seven high-profile cases, including the 2015 Treasury Bond scandal and the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa reported that the Ministry urged the Acting IGP to prioritize these cases to ensure faster resolution.
Investigations Under Scrutiny
Among the other cases gaining renewed attention is the suspicious death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter in 2022. Additionally, the 2023 death of a police officer during a shooting incident near W15 Hotel in Weligama has also been marked for expedited investigation.
The disappearance of Eastern University Vice Chancellor Prof. S. Raveendranath in 2006 is another case where investigations have been slow. The Ministry instructed the CID to assign more officers to these cases to speed up progress.
Taraki Sivaram’s Murder to Be Investigated Again
The abduction and murder of Tamil journalist Taraki Sivaram in 2005 has also been highlighted. The journalist, who was kidnapped near the Bambalapitiya police station, was found dead near Parliament the following day. The Ministry instructed law enforcement to re-investigate the case and provide a progress report.
Furthermore, the Ministry is pushing for updates on the disappearances of activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganathan, who vanished in Jaffna in December 2011.
