Narendra Modi Meets Legendary 1996 Sri Lankan Cricket Team During Colombo Visit

During his official visit to Colombo, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took time to meet several iconic members of Sri Lanka’s 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup-winning squad.

Sharing his experience on social media, Prime Minister Modi expressed joy over the memorable interaction, noting that the legendary team continues to inspire cricket fans around the world.

Cricket greats such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva were among the celebrated players who met with the Indian leader. However, former captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to their historic World Cup victory, was not present due to being overseas at the time.

Sri Lanka’s triumph in the 1996 World Cup final against Australia remains a defining moment in the country’s sporting history, heralding a golden era for cricket on the island.
