Nvidia Unleashes GR00T N1: The AI Model Powering the Next-Gen Humanoid Robots

Nvidia has officially launched Isaac GR00T N1, an open-source, customizable AI model designed to revolutionize humanoid robotics. This pretrained foundation model aims to accelerate robot learning and enhance their real-world capabilities.

“The age of generalist robotics is here,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during his GTC 2025 keynote. “With Isaac GR00T N1 and new robot-learning frameworks, developers will unlock the next frontier of AI-powered robotics.”

AI-Powered Humanoids Are Becoming Reality

Huang showcased 1X Technologies’ NEO Gamma humanoid robot in action, performing autonomous tidying tasks using GR00T N1’s post-trained policies. 1X CEO Bernt Børnich emphasized the model’s impact, stating that it significantly enhances robotic reasoning and adaptability with minimal additional training.

“Our mission is to create robots that are more than just tools – they are companions capable of meaningful assistance,” Børnich said.

The GR00T N1 model has already been adopted by leading robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, Mentee Robotics, and Neura Robotics.

How GR00T N1 Works: A Dual-System AI Inspired by Human Thinking

Originally introduced as Project GR00T, the model utilizes a dual-system architecture based on human cognition:

  • System 1: A fast-thinking action model, trained on human demonstrations and synthetic data, mimics reflexes and intuition for real-time robotic actions.
  • System 2: A slow-thinking reasoning model that processes vision and language to plan and execute complex, multi-step tasks.

This approach enables GR00T N1-powered robots to grasp objects, manipulate items with one or two arms, and complete advanced, multi-skill operations.

Open-Source Access for Developers

Nvidia has made GR00T N1’s training data and task evaluation scenarios freely available on Hugging Face and GitHub, allowing developers to fine-tune its capabilities for specialized applications.

With AI-driven humanoid robots rapidly advancing, Nvidia’s GR00T N1 is set to be a game-changer in robotics development—paving the way for more intelligent, adaptable, and human-like machines.
