According to official Vatican reports, 88-year-old Pope Francis is in critical condition after suffering a severe respiratory illness. On Saturday, the Pope required oxygen support and blood transfusions due to breathing difficulties.
Under the supervision of doctors at Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis was admitted on February 14 following a bilateral lung infection. His condition has further deteriorated due to a drop in platelet count and anemia, with medical professionals stating that he is “still not out of danger.”
Health Crisis Sparks Resignation Discussions
Despite remaining mentally alert and able to sit up in a chair, the Pope is reportedly experiencing increased discomfort compared to previous days. Given his age and pre-existing lung conditions, doctors have warned of potential complications such as sepsis.
This health crisis has led to discussions among Vatican officials and observers regarding a possible papal resignation. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi noted that Pope Francis’ leadership is now at a critical juncture, adding that if he becomes unable to maintain direct communication with the faithful, resignation may be considered.
If this occurs, it would follow the precedent set by Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 due to health reasons. Although Pope Francis has previously described the papacy as a lifelong commitment, he has acknowledged that severe health challenges could lead him to reconsider.
No Immediate Resignation, But Ongoing Discussions
Currently, Pope Francis continues to fulfill some of his duties from his hospital bed, and there are no official indications of an imminent resignation. However, ongoing debates about his health and leadership capacity suggest that the topic remains relevant.
Historically, papal resignations have been rare. Before Pope Benedict XVI, the last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415. Reports indicate that Pope Francis has already drafted a resignation letter in case of extreme circumstances.
Despite this, the Pope has emphasized that resignation should not become a standard practice among popes.
Meanwhile, the Vatican continues its religious observances without his presence, and priests and believers worldwide are offering prayers for his recovery.
