In a significant move aimed at supporting private sector workers, the Cabinet of Ministers has given the green light to a proposal increasing the national minimum wage. Starting from April 1, 2025, the monthly minimum salary for employees in the private sector will rise from Rs. 17,500 to Rs. 27,000. Likewise, the daily minimum wage will go up from Rs. 700 to Rs. 1,080.
The wage hike was proposed by the Minister of Labour as part of the government’s 2025 budget initiatives, reflecting efforts to improve living standards for the workforce.
Looking ahead, the Cabinet has also sanctioned a second phase of this wage increase. Effective January 1, 2026, the minimum monthly salary will be further elevated to Rs. 30,000, with the daily rate set to rise to Rs. 1,200.
The Ministry of Labour has confirmed that the relevant legal changes to enforce the wage revision will be presented in Parliament this May.
