Sri Lanka Customs Holds 400 Vehicles Due to Regulatory Confusion – Importers Urge Government Action

A regulatory misstep in vehicle importation policies has led to nearly 400 vehicles being held at Sri Lanka Customs for over 20 days, claim industry representatives.

Indika Sampath Merenchige, Chairman of the Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka, highlighted that the requirement to specify either the production year or exact manufacturing date has created significant compliance challenges. He emphasized the need for a thorough review of the regulation to avoid further disruptions.

Merenchige warned that the prolonged delay might discourage prospective buyers and called for swift government intervention. Additionally, he pointed out that the rising demurrage costs due to the clearance hold-up would ultimately be passed on to consumers, leading to vehicle price increases of approximately Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000.

As a temporary measure, he proposed imposing penalties on importers for any documentation lapses instead of withholding the vehicles. He urged the President, in his capacity as Finance Minister, along with other key officials, to take immediate responsibility in resolving the issue.
