Sri Lanka Dispatches 26-Member Relief Team to Support Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

A 26-member specialized team comprising medical professionals and disaster relief personnel from Sri Lanka’s tri-forces, under the leadership of Brigadier Punya Karunathilake, departed for Myanmar today (April 5) to aid communities impacted by a recent earthquake.

This humanitarian mission was launched under the guidance of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and coordinated by the Ministry of Defence. The initiative highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to regional solidarity and international cooperation during times of crisis.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation with historic religious ties to Sri Lanka—especially in the preservation and revival of Theravada Buddhism—is set to receive more than just emergency relief. The consignment includes essential medical supplies and other humanitarian aid, which were generously donated by citizens across the island. These efforts were guided by the Venerable Maha Sangha, including the Chief Prelates of the three main Buddhist chapters.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SriLankan Airlines also played key roles in facilitating this mission, ensuring timely logistics and diplomatic coordination.
