UN Report Warns AI Threatens More Jobs Held by Women in Wealthy Nations

A new report by the United Nations’ International Labour Organization (ILO) has raised concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) is likely to reshape jobs traditionally held by women more than those held by men—particularly in high-income countries.

According to the findings, nearly 9.6% of female-dominated occupations are at risk of being significantly transformed by AI, compared to just 3.5% of male-dominated roles. The report attributes this disparity to AI’s growing ability to handle administrative and clerical functions, including tasks such as secretarial duties and office management.

However, the ILO emphasized that the rise of AI does not necessarily mean widespread job loss. Many roles are expected to evolve, with AI handling specific tasks while human workers remain essential in overseeing and completing others.

Industries such as media, software development, and finance are also experiencing rapid change as generative AI tools become more advanced and capable of performing complex tasks.

The report urged governments, businesses, and workers’ unions to collaborate on policies that leverage AI to boost both job quality and overall productivity, rather than allowing it to displace workers without support or preparation.
